I used to think of it as like date gathering on natasha has it backwards. My way of thinking about the strategy was, when could i get her to say yes? And ideally, both parties have to continue to be happy with this decision for a very long time. I suspect if you had the data, a very long stretching relationships and then a proposal, i think they would do worse. Not saying it's causal y, i think it reflects a difficulty of committing among at least some sub set of people or maybe reflected the fact that maybe deep down they knew it wasn't right, and that's why they never did it.
