The Earth's Magnetic Field

The team has designed and built a model of the earth's core to try to better understand all the changes we see in the magnetic field. We essentially try to mimic the conditions that occur in an outer core of the earth or other planets where there is rotating turbulence which then causes electric currents and magnetic fields to be produced. And that's really the source of the Earth's main magnetic field - convection in the inner core. The scientists chose sodium because it is the best electrical conductor of any liquid.
