Gildass wrote a religious polemic about the corruption of his time in AD 540. He presents Britain as an un-Roman province with no central authority and multiple warlords. Excavation has shown that there are quite a lot of settlements at the time, they seem prosperous. But when we're talking about Roman culture it's tied to hyper-wealthy villas but rural people were excluded from lifestyle.
