Navigating in Space

Navigating in space really depends on how far away from earth you are. If you're pretty close, you might be able to rely on things like g p s or the earth's magnetic field. Slightly further out, and you need to send signals back forth between ground control and once you get to the edge of our solar system and beyond, you're on your own. You'll need to rely on the changing positions of the stars to find your way - which is rather like the way mariners used to use sextants at sea.
