As timid as Césaire was from the viewpoint of a genuine constitutionalist, he was far from the most absolutist of theorists. French political ideas evolved in a more autocratic direction toward the middle of the century. Around this time, Charles Dumoulin was pushing to its limits the long-standing idea that the king is a living law. In his mirror for princes, Guillaume Bude discouraged the ruler from sharing power with anyone.
