The oldest recorded Galapagos tortoise was a tortoise called Harriet, who we think was picked up by Charles Darwin on his expedition to the Galapagos Islands. It's something like a hundred and seventy five hundred and seventy seven years old. She ended up surviving Darwin by over a century. This really shows you that if you can flatten out that mortality curve it is possible for an animal to live forever. The other thing that's really exciting about these animals isn't just that they don't die, they're not sort of staggering on frail, unhealthy. They maintain that health.
