Vessy's plan included trapping the white preachers within the city and explicitly asking them why they didn't follow the verses that he so often preached to his audience. Vessy was vocal in his abolitionist position, both with white men and enslaved black men equally. He also wasn't the first person to make a theological argument against slavery.
