The Argument for Democracy Empowering People

The probability that my vote will be decisive is on most models, vanishingly small. In the same way that I don't feel like I have a lot of power in virtue of having a lottery ticket, it would be weird to say has a lot ofpower in virtue ofhaving a vote. Because our votes don't matter very much, we are able to use political ideology not as a way of forming true beliefs about the world but rather as a banner or flag around which we can rally.
