Why was it that the mediaeval inquisition in the latin west became so much more organized and pervasive than in the east and in islam? You alluded to it a bit before when we talked about the byzantine east. But what were the different dynamics in play? The greeks and latins have a common heritage in roman law. We see this very self consciously thought about and practised in the latina west. And i do believe it has a significant influence on inquisitorial practice. And again, we don't see something comparable in the byZantine east.
