Until the 19th century in Gentile circles and until today in some Orthodox Jewish circles, that is more or less the mainstream opinion. In the 17th century, European scholars, people like Thomas Hobbes actually began to point out funny things about the biblical texts. And the story of how the Bible once seen as a pretty unified book was dismembered by scholars into layer upon layer of textual traditions.
