Technically Legal - A Legal Technology and Innovation Podcast

CHAPTER

The Importance of Fair Use in Copyright Law

Stanford's Professor Mark Lemley says there should be a fair learning exception to copyright law. This applies to AI companies in their use of copyrighted material to train their models. He explains why it's probably impossible for AI developers to go out and secure millions of licenses for the copyrighted works they use. And he also points out that if using copyrighted work to train AI is considered a fair use, it means there will be more data available to train the models.
