Plutarch's Life of the Mysticlies
The mysticlies was one of the new breed of non-Aristocratic politicians who rose to prominence in the early years of the Athenian democracy. Born around 524 BC, his father, Neoclas, was nobody important politically and there were allegations that his mother was a Thracian slave. As a young man, the mysticlies moved to the potter's quarter of the city, to the northwest of the Acropolis. This marked him out as a man of the people, and allowed him to interact more easily with ordinary citizens. He wooed the poor, and they fittingly loved him back.
