The Legend of Galileo by Viviani
Galileo came up with a compelling thought experiment in his writing, and Viviani then turned it into an entertaining story that he claimed really happened. The fact that there are no records from between 1589 and 1592 when Galileo was a professor at Pisa that mentioned this experiment taking place really make it seem like a myth. But whether or not Galileo wowed a crowd by dropping balls from the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it's clear that by 1592 his reputation had grown. He was now ready to leave behind his hometown university in Pisa and make a play for the chair of mathematics at one of the most prestigious universities in all of Europe - University of Padua.
