Sound is the bedrock of commercial music. If you're buying music to have a commodity, then you want an individual voice. To be seen to be copying somebody else's sound was seen as morally wrong. And so within the industry, and when you talk to older jazz musicians, this is definitely the case. You can see this up with me saying a musician like Alan Holzworth has such a signature sound. But it's not necessarily wrong. It's a little too dogmatic for what it is.
