John Hattie wrote a landmark book called Professional Learning, which came out in 2008. The heart of this book is a list of 138 influences on student learning. And number one on the list was students being allowed to evaluate their own work. Students do really well when you give them the rubric and you say, go through your assignment and see how you did.
