The Troubles in Afghanistan

A drought in 1972 forced the Afghan government to look at other avenues of revenue. In addition to trying to get closer to the United States, they also wanted to mend their diplomatic ties with Pakistan and Iran. The Soviet Union got kind of concerned when it saw Afghanistan reaching out to its Cold War enemy.
