Wonder's Success in the Sixties
Motown still maintained iron control over how his material would be released. And they sat on tracks that eventually became massive pop hits. I Was Made to Love Her and Shubi-Dubi-Doo-Dah Day were all number ones on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues chart, but only landed within the top ten on the Hot 100. This wouldn't have been remarkable if not for the fact that during this same period, the Hot 100 was being repeatedly topped by such crossover Motown superstars as The Supremes, and The Temptations. By 1968, Marvin Gaye was topping the pop chart too.
