The Great Man Theory of History
I think we could adopt a great man or woman theory of politics in the sense that Harry Truman is making very specific decisions that 99 others, right? 96 other senators, I believe, would not have made. Who is in the chair matters, the values that person has matters, and how they can and cannot learn from different history lessons. He started very shaky, very deferential to the powers that be that were coming for his committee. Three years later, you see him much more willing to push back in a respectful, civil way. But there's a hairy Truman out there today reading this book.
