The earliest written examples of Indo-European languages do not appear to have a grammatically separate feminine gender. The book does take us in a beautiful way to much of this complexity and there are some fantastic word portraits that leave you thinking for many many hours afterwards. I was just in Spain last week at a gender and science communication conference and one of the sessions was on how difficult it is for researchers and reporters to write about science in a fair inclusive way because even the word for scientist in the Spanish language is either a male scientist or a female scientist.
