It was a bid by iran, and in particular, the adula himself, to seize leadership of the moslem world. The idea of blasphemy in islam is one that is quite controversial. There are very many different interpretations of what constitutes blasphemy. No consensus that blasphemy deserves the death sentence. For apostasy within islamic theology there is only one act which does merit the death sentence: renouncing it up.
