"This is for deep fandom. I'm glad it's there, but you need to be a heavy duty fan and I'm not," he says. "It will become the mythology of the English speaking peoples at some point ... Maybe after they're all gone." He adds that Tolkien could have published anything he wanted to and chose not to. It's an odd book by an odd guy that is fairly wonderful, but might not be for you.
