The Peloponnesian War

Sparta had sent embassies to the Persian king Artaxerxes and other unspecified non-Greek powers. The Spartans ordered their Peloponnesian League allies to prepare provisions for a forthcoming invasion of Attica. Thucydides colligated the events of the 27 years, meaning that he tied separate events together in order to form a coherent whole. It has been tradition ever since to think of the Pelop onnesian War as this 27-year event of continuous fighting.
