The Difference Between a Generative AI System and a Copyrighted Work as Training Data
The authors guild sued Google for digitizing millions of in copyright books from research library collections. The courts eventually found that that was fair use because Google wasn't trying to exploit the expression, and you couldn't essentially supplant demand for the original. So why can generative AI system? Well, I think that the people who design these systems leave that if you take data from the open internet, you scrape data from theopen internet, that you aren't hurting anybody.
