Outlaw Westerns - The New Western
After 1920 there was an evolution and a development of a rougher and more primitive version of the cowboy which puts more emphasis on violence. There's an increasing complexity to the cowboy archetype where people can project their own darker nature or darker impulses onto the cowboy. The outlaw is glorified as a rebel against convention and against corruption so there have been hundreds of books and movies glorifying bandit outlaw figures like billy the kid.
