The Effect of Gravitational Lensing on JD-1

JD-1 can be seen three times in the sky because it's actually behind some other galaxies. This is the effect of what we call gravitational lensing. If you have a cluster of very massive galaxies that are nearby to us between us and that distant object, they act as nature's magnifying glass if you want. So for instance, if we have a very distant object that resides behind that cluster, the light that would ordinarily miss us gets bent around and amplified so that distant galaxy appears brighter than it ordinarily would.
