We tend to think of the big bang as an explosion, but it's probably better described as an expansion. That's when the universe exploded in size, doubling and doubling over and over again. Scientists talk about this super rapid expansion as inflation; that's a very telling term. In other words, the inflating universe didn't inflate into anything. There was nothing outside of the universe, and it didn'tinflate around anything.
