The History of English Stress Patterns
In old English, words were usually stressed on the first syllable that didn't apply to prefixes. That stress pattern is older than English and goes back to the original proto-Germanic language. But after the Norman conquest, that stress pattern became more complicated. The natural rhythm of English was so strong that speakers usually modified the stress patterns in those old loan words to fit the English model.
