In 2009, rumors that some singer-sewing machines contained red mercury spread all over Saudi Arabia. In 2013, a similar rumor took hold in Zimbabwe and led to the deaths of six people who were trying to extract it from land mines. Nobody needs to believe these land mines contain red mercury to fall prey to them, but we do know they can be dangerous.
