There are three categories of being single: legally single, socially single and personally single. The legal one overlaps in certain areas with the benefits you get from being a 'single', but also has social ramifications as well. People may be expected to work more than other people because they don't have anything else important going on or clear obligations that might get in the way of working. You may not be entitled to plus to bring plus one to events, or you may not invited to events that are oriented towards couples. A lot of consumer goods and services are priced around two people so it's harder for singles to buy groceries when there is only one person who can help them out. It feels similar
