The Coup of 18 Brumer

In october 17 99, czar paul tore up the alliance with the austrians and withdrew from the war. The final break with the british would not come until mid 18 hundred though, by which point the czar was chatting it up with french first consul, napoleon bonaparte about the possibility of a mutually benefit alliance. Ironically, the great victories of the french in the fall of 17 99 and the sudden withdrawal of the russians from the second coalition did not strengthen and stabilize the directory, but instead paved the way for its overthrow.
