CHAPTER

Jung's Confrontation With the Unconscious

We need to trace a timeline from Jung's split with Freud to the moment he reads his first chemical text. Autumn of 1913 is the beginning of what Jung will later refer to as his confrontation with the unconscious. This experience compels him to document his dreams and meditation visions in his blackbook journals. He also begins to feel a compulsion to transcribe these same visions more formally in the manner of an illuminated manuscript written in multiple languages, complimented by original artworks. After several years of working on the Red Book, Jung finds this historical parallel in Gnosticism.
