St. Francis' Introduction to Mortification
Mortification puts to death lower desires in a certain sense, so that there is again space to pursue those higher things. So we kind of rein in the desire, especially for food, for drink, for sexual intercourse. It's not to say that we shouldn't eat or drink or have sexual intercourse in the context of family life. Those aren't to be all an end all, and that we shouldn’t define our lives by the exercise of them.
