He says there's a romanticized orientalism, a kind of fantasy of India as a place of universal mystical wisdom and healing goodness. This really has a long history from Helene Blavatsky to late 20th century yoga cults, he says. Zuckerman: It's an idealization that hides the complexity of a cruel religious history.
