Bart Bonacowski is Associate Professor of Sociology and Politics at New York University. He says populism is a way of framing political projects that the candidates use frequently on both the left and the right. It's an important ingredient in the way that these parties appeal to voters, he says. In 2016, populism was a core attribute of Trump politics of the campaign; by 2020, it would be less often used.
