The History of Amusement Parks
In 1901, Edwin Prescott developed a looping roller coaster with a teardrop shaped loop. John Miller was issued his first patent in 1910 for a safety device called the Chainlift. The Coney Island cyclone built in 1927 reached speeds of 55 miles or 89 kilometers per hour and had an 85 foot drop. By the 1920s, there were amusement parks on every continent except Antarctica.
The French word for “roller coaster” is “montagnes russes” or “Russian mountains.” Since the origin of roller coasters, inventors have been improving the early designs that came from Russia to create astonishing amusement park thrill rides.
