Aretha herself was spectacular. She didn't speak much to the musicians, just went to the piano and started playing. Jerry Wexler later compared her playing to Thelonious Monk. Everyone involved said that the musicians were taking their cues from a ether rather than anyone else. Bruno Oldham had been booked to play piano, it was quickly decided to switch him to electric piano and organ - leaving the acoustic piano for a ether to play. Rick Hall at fame is the credited co-producer on this initial session.
