A-LAR is a chemical that was sprayed on apples to regulate their growth and improve their appearance. The scare began with press stories that the chemical, when consumed in gigantic doses, caused cancerous tumors in rats and mice. Subsequent research confirmed that the substance might pose a very small risk as a possible carcinogen but the A-LAR incident was certainly an enormous overreaction to a minor problem.
