The scare began with press stories that the chemical, when consumed in gigantic doses, caused cancerous tumors in rats and mice. Subsequent research confirmed that the substance might pose a very small risk as a possible carcinogen but the A-LAR incident was certainly an enormous overreaction to a minor problem.
