I know esther comes under a little bit of criticism for being wet or speaking twaddle. But if you really in her shoes and think about the childhood she had, i think she's wonderful. We discover quite early on that she was brought up by a rather brutal woman called miss barbary who constantly reminded her that she was a disgrace. She reminds me very much of jane austen's most insipid, some people would say, heroine, fanny in mansfield park. Some of them are quiet and staid, but have a deep quality of honour and a placid nature - which is a very common human nature.
