Freemasonry in Britain and the Continent
freemasonry was considered suspect, and it was highly controversial everywhere that it existed. In scotland in the seventeenth century, outsiders often associated them with witchcraft or demonism. The english were susceptible to similar fears. So basically, in the english speaking world, there was comparatively less state involvement in matters of belief. There was also a much freer and more prolific press. And so in the englishspeaking world, when freemasons wanted to deal with criticism and opposition, the main strategy was to put forward their own messages.
