In the Pierce case, Holmes's dissent was fairly limited in that respect. He said that although he thought the laws were wrong-headed, he thought that people should be allowed to learn language at an early age. The state nevertheless did have a legitimate interest in fostering so-called Americanization and that this particular law did not go too far.
