Bob Greene: I've had long interest in transient culture of the Pacific Northwest. He says Hobos, Tramps and bums were pre-modern homeless who didn't use term "homeless" They used different terms to describe themselves; you were a Hobo that meant you moved around and worked. Greene: The modern era we're living in now really begins in 1980. And at that time there was an intense debate about new homeless versus old homeless.
