Yom Kippur was not a day of fasting in the sense that the fast represents the main way of engaging the day. One is engaged by with refraining from food, and one is engaged by partaking in food. So Hazal were hinting to us, the Tariqadoshis hinted to us, that this is not ultimately about suffering but rather doing whatever it is that we have to do on that day with intentionality.
