The Legacy of Ambition
The threat of the ambition of the young man leaving England to make his way in the colonies is so powerful. I don't think that ambition can be divorced from how someone came to it, of how it's structurally upheld in America. The pursuit of self-esteem is a particularly American phenomenon grounded and born of our nation's founding ideologies. It could look all different ways depending on what someone's priorities or what their social context is.
