
Why are children in the UK at risk of serious strep A infections?

Introduction
Since September in England and Wales, at least eight children have now died after contracting a strep-A infection. The UK Health Security Agency says that investigations are underway following reports of an increase in cases. Group A streptococci bacteria usually cause mild illnesses like skin infections, tonsillitis or scarlet fever but can all be treated with antibiotics.
