Freudian theory says there are three types of self: protectors, exiles and the self. A protector is a part of your body that protects you from pain or rejection. Exiles are what IFS calls our "creative selves" They can do serious damage if they're not dealt with properly. To get a felt sense of what a protector is, try this guided exercise.
