Ibn Taimiya was a jurist with new ideas about how to reach correct verdicts within Islamic law. He associated himself closely with one of the main Sunni schools, the Hanbalis. But he rejected or reinvented such basic legal concepts as consensus. For him, the only consensus that mattered was that of the first generations.
