We Must Be Just and Reasonable
Self-love usually leads us astray from reason, drawing us unconsciously into a thousand small yet dangerous injustices and wrongs. These things of which I am about to speak are they not unjust and unreasonable? We condemn every little thing in our neighbors while excusing ourselves and things that are great. On all occasions we prefer the rich to the poor, even though they are neither of better condition nor as virtuous. Even if anyone has an agreeable manner that is pleasing to us, he can do nothing that we are not willing to excuse.
