The scientists were literally watching or in actual fact as I'm describing it listening to the brain of the rats as they were imprinting new memories into the brain. So as the rat is running around the maze you would hear this signature of learning. But by far and away the more remarkable part of the experiment happened not when those rats were awake and learning but when those rats fell asleep. During deep non-rem sleep the brain will actually replay memory experiences anywhere from 10 to 20 times faster than waking reality. And it's just mind blowing stuff.
