The Myth of Magellan and Filiro
Archbishop Fonseca felt that Magellan and Filiro had too much power granted to them by the royal charter. He sought to curb that power by eliminating the number of Portuguese who could be in the fleet. The expedition would have an undercurrent of distrust running through it as people didn't trust Magellan due to his nationality. There was always a fear that Magellan was secretly working for Portugal and undermining the entire affair.
