Miasma, a Common Explanation for the Cholera Epidemic

Miasma is an ancient idea, even though it became very popular in the nineteenth century. It's an explanatory model of why everyone can get at a similar time in a seasonable seasonal matter. And miasma indeed was an incredibly common explanation for the poor state of health of settlers in the american middle west. The pale, sallow, bloated faces of that period were the rule. There were no healthy faces, except of persons just arrived.
